Halkidiki

Halkidiki or Chalkidiki can be easily recognized beacuse of its unique shape. In fact it resembles three “fingers” that go into the sea: these three “fingers” are Kassandra, Sithonia and Mt. Athos. Chalkidiki is famous for its beautiful white beaches.

Also known as Halkidiki this part of Greece is famous for its beautiful beaches covered in white sand that can be easily reached and often not very crowded. Every “finger” has its own name. The first one is called Kassandra, the second Sithonia and the third Monte Athos.

Like in most parts of Greece there is also a small island nearby called Ammouliani, located netween Sithonia and Mount Athos. A wonderful tiny island with golden sand and crystal clear waters. Famous for its white beaches it has grown a lot in the last few years as many tourists have starting visiting this part of Greece to admire the truly amazing beaches and beauties of this part of Greece.

How to reach Halkidiki

The first “finger” of the peninsula is only 70 km from Thessaloniki, which means that it can be reached in about 50 minutes going through the highway. So once you arrive in the airport of Thessaloniki you will just have to rent a car and reach Halkidiki and it’s beautiful beaches.

If you prefer taking a bus to reach Chalkidiki you should look for busses from the company Ktel that travel on a daily basis from Thessaloiki to the other villages and towns nearby. If you prefer travelling with your own car you can look for one of the highways after you have arrived in the port of Igoumenitsa.

All you will have to do is take the highway for Giannina before going towards Thessaloniki. In about 4 hours you will reach the first peninsula of Halkidiki: Kassandra.

What to see in Halkidiki

In Chalkidiki there are many small villages both in the central part and around the coast where you will find the traditional Greek atmosphere that is now lost in many other areas. For example there are Aphitos, Agios Nikolaos, Uronapoli, three villages where you will find some restaurants that serve traditional delicious Greek dishes.

During the summer there are also many events held in these villages. Halkidiki, as the ancient Greeks called it, is a famous destination thanks to its beautiful beaches and is often rather crowded during the summer.

Thanks to the wonderful nature, a lovely climate, historical and artistic remains it is also a perfect place to visit during low season . there are also many activities to choose from, like: birdwatching, trekking, excursions, mountain biking and cave exploration.

Last but not least there are also quite a few archeological sites. Also the sea can be visited outside the high season since the temperatures are very mild for most of the year giving you the chance to swim and enjoy the sea for up to 5 months. These are the average temperatures during the year:

Halkidiki for families and people looking for nightlife

Halkidiki is an ideal place for all kind of tourists and for this reason it is a very good choice for both families and people that are looking for somewhere with a vibrant nightlife. If you are travelling with your family we recommend you visit Sithonia as there are many structures for tourists travelling with children.

Besides this in Sithonia you will also find some beautiful beaches that are often very quiet and isolated. If you are looking for the Greek vibrant nightlife you should go to Kassandra where you will find villages like Nea Potidaia and Kallithea that have pubs, discos and places where to listen to some live music and dance all night.
